The ARS “Ani”
Chapter of Philadelphia
An ARS chapter was established in Philadelphia in 1911 under the banner ARF Armenian Red Cross. In 1930, the chapter split into a West chapter and a North chapter. The West Chapter’s members resided in West Philadelphia and the North Chapter’s members resided in North Philadelphia . .
The ARS West Chapter was deeply involved in the ANCHA displaced persons resettlement project, with the chapter assisting many Armenians displaced from Stuttgart , Germany to Philadelphia . Members worked tirelessly to find these displaced persons jobs and housing in the city.
The Ani Chapter was established in 1950 when a group of young women joined forces to start a chapter comprised of young women. Joining the already existing Philadelphia West and Philadelphia North ARS chapters, the Ani Junior ARS Chapter was born.
The Ani Chapter held its meetings at 56 th and Spruce Street in Philadelphia at a small building purchased by the ARS. Lucy S. Jourigian was the first president of the Ani Chapter, which had about 40 members.
The roots of today’s Ani and Artemis Chapters are deep in the history of yesterday’s Philadelphia North and West chapters and the Ani Junior chapter.
