ARS of Eastern US

Benefactors

Those who paved the way for ARS

Each year, the ARS of Eastern USA honors the memory of departed members and benefactors through special requiem services, which are held on the last Sunday in February throughout Prelacy Armenian Apostolic Churches. In addition to honoring the memory of our departed ARS members, we also remember our benefactors who have left generous donations to our organization, allowing us to make continuous impact in the US and around the world. This occasion also serves to value and cherish the legacy our founder, benefactors, and members have left behind and further motivate current members to continue their work to realize the mission and goals of the ARS.

EDGAR AGNOUNI

ARS Founder

Edgar Agnouni (Khachatur Malumian) was born in 1863, in Meghry. After studying at the Geneva University, he became a journalist and a political activist. In 1910, he was tasked to visit the newly formed Armenian communities of the United States. What was supposed to be a journey of 2-3 months, lasted much longer. He traveled coast to coast to reach every community. where his charm and charisma reached the hearts of everyone with his love of country and revolutionary interests. After coming across many Armenian women who were ready and willing to serve their communities and homeland, he formed an organization that eventually became the Armenian Relief Society. Upon returning to the homeland, Agnouni was killed during the Armenian Genocide when the Young Turks rounded up Armenian intellectuals and leaders in 1915.
